Applications

    2-phenylethylamine (PEA) is soluble in water, ethanol and ether. Phenylethylamine is a skin irritant and possible sensitizer. 2-phenylethylamine is considered a neuromodulator or neurotransmitter (trace amine). It is also found in many foods such as chocolate, especially after microbial fermentation. 2-phenylethylamine is a precursor of the neurotransmitter phenylethanolamine. High levels of 2-phenethylamine were found in the urine of patients with schizophrenia, but not significantly elevated in the serum or cerebrospinal fluid of patients with schizophrenia. Urinary 2-phenylethylamine levels were significantly reduced in children with ADHD. 2-phenylethylamine can be used to scare off rodent pests .
